Frequently Asked Questions

What is occupational therapy?

Pediatric occupational therapy is a specialized area of therapy that focuses on helping children develop the skills necessary for daily activities and independent living. Whether addressing challenges related to developmental delays, physical disabilities, or behavioral issues, our goal as occupational therapists is to empower children to thrive in their environments, boost their confidence, and achieve their personal milestones.

What skills do occupational therapists target?

Occupational therapy address a wide range of skills to support children's functional engagement and participation in different settings.

For a comprehensive list of the skills and categories targeted, please visit the "Intervention" tab for detailed information on how occupational therapy can help.

How often and how long will my child need therapy and when will he/she be discharged?

Therapy plans can be customized to fit your family’s schedule, with the frequency and duration of therapy tailored to your child's needs following a formal evaluation. A 6-month commitment is required.

Every 3 months, you'll receive a progress report. At the end of each 6-month period, we'll reassess your child's skills and goals to determine if continued therapy is needed. Based on our clinical recommendations, you'll have the flexibility to decide whether to continue or conclude services.

As each child develops at their own pace, the exact timeline for therapy may vary. Discharge is typically recommended when your child has met their goals and no longer has concerns about their functional abilities.

What ages do you work with?

Occupational therapy services are available for children and young adults ages 4 to 21.

Portee OT does not offer early intervention (for children birth to 3 years old) occupational therapy services.

Do you only conduct therapy sessions in my home?

Currently, therapy sessions are conducted either in your home or in the community, specifically targeting community navigation skills and independence, during scheduled community integration and travel training sessions.

Will you collaborate with outside providers, such as my child's teachers and other therapists?

Yes, Portee OT uses a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together professionals from various disciplines to address the needs of children.

With your consent, communication with outside providers will be used to further support your child and ensure skills are carried over and generalized across different contexts.

What is your availability?

Services are available Monday through Friday, after school hours. Therapy sessions are scheduled in 60-minute blocks from 3:30 to 7:30 PM, based on availability.

Evaluations can be scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays, while therapy sessions are only offered on weekdays.

Do you offer remote sessions for therapy?

Yes, we offer remote occupational therapy sessions. These can be scheduled for 60 minutes, just like in-person sessions, or used as backup for situations such as inclement weather or personal circumstances.

Can family members participate in sessions?

There may be times when your participation is encouraged, while at other times it may be more beneficial for you to step out. This approach helps maintain your child’s focus and allows for greater engagement in therapeutic activities.

The goal is to find the right balance between your involvement and your child's need for independent skill development. We will always keep you informed about when your participation is needed and when it's best for your child to work on their own.
